Beginner's Kit

For those beginning their love for make-ups we can empathize with you how confusing and overwhelming it can be to know which products to get, but do not fear because Mixxed is here to help you.  We’ve gathered some products for a Beginner’s Kit, these are mostly products that are fool-proof and you will need on a daily basis.

Personally, we don’t think it is necessary to spend wads of cash on make-ups especially when you are just starting out or a teenager. However, if there is one product you should spend on that is foundation, having said that, it does not mean that only the expensive foundations are worth trying there are certainly drugstore products out in the market that are far better than high-end brands, one of them is the Revlon Colorstay. This foundation gives you a matte finish, stays on for hours and budget friendly. Although the available shades aren’t as wide as Mac would offer but it is definitely worth checking.

However, for teenagers or lucky ladies with near perfect skin, we would suggest you to opt for BB Creams instead. BB Cream is the middle ground between a tinted moisturizer and a foundation hence the texture is light whilst giving you a good coverage. Also BB Creams mostly come with SPFs so thumbs up on that! Some BB Creams to try are Skin79 Pink or Gold for a full coverage and Bio Essence for sheer/medium coverage.

On the other hand, if you are ready or willing to shell out money for make-ups we would suggest that you do an intensive research on the products before buying therefore the chances of you not liking them is less. A good website to check out is www.makeupalley.com. Most of the beauty products you can think of is there and will definitely have a review. So do check that out meanwhile let’s get started with our Beginner’s Kit.

LA Girl Compact Powder - $ 63.00 (HKD)
Most people like to have face powder that gives you full coverage but this is not a good idea because chances are you will look like a geisha. Face powders should only be used for setting your foundation and touching up in the middle of the day so try something with light coverage but will help mattify your face and this compact powder does the job.

LA Girl Pro Concealer - $45.00 (HKD)
This is definitely a must-have in our kits because really a little dab here and there makes a huge difference. This concealer is probably the best you can find for its price. It gives you medium to full coverage and blends very easily.

LA Colors Mineral Blush - $ 63.00 (HKD)
Finding a blush is not really hard because there are literally millions of blushes out in the market to choose from. But this blush comes with a brush that is very good to use especially when travelling and for touching up during the day. It does have a little bit of shimmer so it gives you a nice blushy glow.

LA Colors 2in1 eyes - $50.00 (HKD)
This is awesome to have in your everyday kit because one end is eyeliner and the other end is mascara, extremely handy!

NYX Lipgloss - $ 40.00 (HKD) and Lipsticks - $ 45.00 (HKD)
For teenagers we would suggest to go for lipglosses rather than lipsticks because they can age you a bit. It is always nice to stick to a simple, fresh and clean look.

To other pretty ladies, for an everyday look try something nearer to your natural lip color. In order to get this, try biting your lips and look in the mirror that will be your natural lip color. Our bestselling colors are, Hebe, Tea Rose and Fig.

However, it is always worth to have a Red lipcolor in your kit so try LA Colors 2in1 lips in Very Berry - $ 40.00 (HKD), lip-liner and lipgloss in one!

LA Colors Eyeshadow in Café au Lait - $ 40.00 (HKD)
It is small, compact and has all the colors you will need besides, we always believe that one can never go wrong with Earth Tones. For a natural everyday look, choose a light color and apply all over the lid then take a deeper color and blend in your crease to create definition.

That should be it for your Beginner’s Kit. I know it looks a lot but these are what every girl should have in their makeup. However for those who do not want to bring a lot of knick-knacks then get the NYX Smokey Eye kit - $ 100.00 (HKD), it comes with 9 eyeshadows, 2 lipglosses, eye applicator and a lip brush all in one little kit. The box also has a step-by-step guide on how to create the smokey eye - definitely worth having!

Well we hope we helped you in your quest to beauty kingdom. Remember ladies, keep it simple and sheek! :)

All the products can be found in our Shop so do check them out.

Book-It! (April)

Well I said in my previous post that I didn’t get to do any readings last month but it bit me in the butt. I had said that without consulting my Book Challenge list where I write all the books I finished each month. I found that I did in fact finished 2 books before my holiday which means I have an excuse to share a BookIt! picture hehe

April Reads
10.  Hana (Delirium Book 1.5)
11.  Tunnels of Blood, book 3 (Darren Shan series)

I have actually read a total of 12 books since we started this challenge, 38 more to go! I just finished Shanghai Girls last night but that will go into my book reads for May.

My books for April are just continuation of what I read on February. Here are my takes on the 2 books.

Hana – If you haven’t read any of the Delirium books, Hana is Lena’s bestfriend. Lena is the main character in both Delirium and Pandemonium. This is more like pocketbook because it just tells you briefly what happened and how Hana felt before she undergoes the “operation”. When they turn 16, everybody needs to undergo an operation to remove their ability to Love because to them Love is a disease which causes serious damage to your brain. I don’t want to explain further because it will ruin the suspense of all the books but I would suggest you to read Delirium before you read Hana and Pandemonium otherwise the plots will not make any sense. To me, this is neither here or there. It really isn’t necessary for you to read this book before going into Pandemonium but then again it is nice to know Hana’s side of the story. Not a good read but also not a bad read, it’s just… okay-ish.

Tunnels of Blood – This is the last book I read in the Darren Shan series. I know there are loads more but I don’t think I will be getting them. As much as I enjoyed this last book I think I’ve had enough of the vampires and extraordinary creatures in my imagination. Like I said in my February post, this is a children’s book so you need to watch out for some really lame storylines but once you let go of those you will be able to enjoy it.

So to choose one book to recommend, I will have to say Tunnels of Blood. I think my May reads will be far more interesting.

Till my next post…

Ciao!

April Favorites

Almost half of the year now… April has been so manic I barely had the chance to grasp everything. First things first, I did not get to do any reading for April. Boo! April went from one event to another and the next thing I know it’s already May. However, I did try out some new products so here’s my April Favorites…

Bourjois Healthy Mix Foundation – This is my current favorite foundation. I’ve been wearing it pretty much everyday. It gives a good amount of coverage especially for the price you pay for. Understandably it is a pretty small bottle but you really don’t need much and for everyday I mostly just put this on places where I need to even out my skin. I use it more like a concealer really. The staying power doesn’t live up to its claim of 8 hours. I’d say it keeps up until 3-5 hours considering you set your foundation properly. All in all I do like this foundation and it is perfect for everyday use especially during the summer time because it is very light on the skin almost making you feel like you have nothing on.

MAC Pro-longwear Foundation – If you need a foundation that won’t budge then try this. I swear it stays on and on and on until you decided to scrape off all the makeup from your face. This is the only foundation I brought and wore during my stay in the Philippines and I can tell you this for sure, it doesn’t go anywhere despite the sweat, humidity and constant wiping of face! It claims to stay on for 15 hours, and it does! Tried and tested! I even wore this foundation to sleep and there are no marks on my pillow. However one bit of advice if you are going to try this, make sure you have a really good makeup remover. As for coverage, I’d say it is a medium but you can definitely build it up. Another thing to watch out for, is that the consistency is rather thick and once applied on the face it might feel a little sticky but it will go away in a good 5-10 minutes. This is a good one to use for events and when you want to look your best for hours, it is also good for taking pictures because it doesn’t have a high SPF level.

Skindinavia Setting Spray (For Oily Skin) – It’s meant to make your makeup last for 16 hours! I can’t say that it did, base on my experience at least. I used this in the Philippines as well and I’m pretty sure it was the Mac foundation and Urban Decay primer potion that made my makeup last and not this setting spray. I’m currently using this with my Healthy Mix and I come home and my foundation wasn’t as what it looked like in the morning so… to say it lasts for 16 hours, not true. However, I like this spray because it gives you a good glow. It feels very fresh on the skin and if in case you put on too much foundation or powder it helps not make your face look cakey. I know that Skindinavia offers different kinds of sprays such as, Bridal, Dancing, Normal/Dry skin, etc but I just decided to try the one for oily skin because of my oily t-zone and no, it did not keep me looking matte all day. It helps a little I guess but don’t expect that this will help you not produce oil.

Beauty Blender – I usually like to use brushes in applying my foundation but this egg sponge just does the work better. You are meant to use this wet so soak it up and squeeze out all the water and you’re good to go. It gives you a more flawless finish plus the fact that you don’t need to worry having streak marks as with using a brush.

Nivea Soft Moisturizer – At the beginning of April I was having problems with my skin. It was breaking out and giving me all these dry patches. I tried the Cetaphil cream lotion and normally it should’ve done the trick but because of the weather it makes it harder for me to use during daytime so I went on a hunt for a thick moisturizer but one that will not make me oily or sticky throughout the day. I stumbled upon this moisturizer whilst doing grocery. It was on sale and I figured heck let’s give it a try and now I’m obsessed! I absolutely swear by this moisturizer. I was a bit skeptical on the Soft part but it really does make you face feel baby butt soft. Try and see for yourself.

Royale Beauty Kojic Soap – I was actually given this soap to try. I know it looks cheeky for me to put this on my favorites but it has honestly saved my life! As said I was experiencing some breakouts and dry patches but after using this for almost a month now, all of my bumps and breakouts are gone. It also helps with my blackheads and redness around my chin and nose. I’m extremely going to stand by this soap 100%. It says it helps make your skin fairer but honestly I don’t mind that part as long as my face is smooth and clear. Hopefully we’d be able to put this up in our shop so all my ladies can try this wonder product.

That’s all for my April Favorites. I’m sure to have a Book-It! Post for next month. I’m currently reading (almost done) with 2 books so yay!
